Barwon Heads Golf Club

The Barwon Heads Golf Club was constructed in 1924 to designs by Klingender & Hamilton, and is Australia's first country club and links course. The clubhouse is architecturally and historically significant to Victoria, as a fine example of an inter-war residential club and for its association with recreation activities.

The original building has been extended and altered in several stages, as early as 1927, to accommodate a growing membership and changing needs. The Club has recently embarked on a new stage of redevelopment to upgrade clubhouse facilities and accommodation, and to undertake a suite of conservation works to the original building. These works will ensure the Club can meet the expectations of members and visiting golfers, and safeguard the building's future use.

Trethowan Architecture's heritage consultants have assisted since 2019 through all stages of this ongoing project. We provided initial design advice to ensure an appropriate heritage outcome that also achieves the brief. We then prepared a heritage permit application with Heritage Victoria, including coordinating pre-application meetings, and responding to RFIs and advertising. Once the permit was received, we have assisted in the satisfaction of permit conditions and are on-hand to advise during construction works. This project is now well underway, and soon to reopen for its next 100 years.
