The Fifth Province

The Fifth Province is a hospitality venue located at the Former St Kilda Railway Station Complex on Fitzroy Street. The site has been heavily altered over time, but still retains evidence of its original purpose, and is the oldest suburban train station in Melbourne. The station operated from 1857 to 1987 when the line was converted to light rail and new platforms constructed. The station building was decommissioned and adaptively reused for hospitality and retail from 2002. despite alterations over time, evidence of the early station design remain including the decorative parapet to Fitzroy Street.

New works at The Fifth Province were designed by Studio Y and included expansion into the neighbouring tenancy, a new outdoor seating area, and general refurbishments.

Trethowan Architecture provided specialist heritage consultancy services to assist with all stages of the Heritage Victoria process. We provided initial design advice, prepared a Heritage Impact Statement and coordinated the permit application submission, assisted with RFIs and advertising, and with the discharge of all permit conditions. Our experienced heritage architects prepared drawings for a scope of repair and conservation works. We worked closely with the venue owner, Studio Y, and Heritage Victoria to achieve a positive outcome that respects the significance of the place and provides a contemporary, functional, and exciting venue.
