Greenline Project Hub
Greenline Project Hub
The Greenline Project Hub is a temporary facility located on the north bank of the Yarra River - Birrarung, at the River Terrace at Federation Square. The building serves as an engagement space for the public to learn about the wider project and collaborate with project partners on ongoing community engagement efforts. It is also used as an office for the Greenline Project team to be based on-site. The opening of the Hub marks a significant milestone for the city shaping Greenline Project.
The Hub is located within Federation Square which is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register (H2390) for its historical, representative, aesthetic, technical and social significance to Victoria. As such, the installation of even a temporary structure needs to be carefully considered to respect, and not harm, the significance of the place. The Hub building achieves this through a discreet, recessive design that uses landscaping to blend into the site, and through a light touch on the ground with micropile footings. The building is a repurposed development display module, retrofitted to minimise construction waste and achieve a sustainable re-use of a redundant asset.
Trethowan assisted the team to liaise with Heritage Victoria and procure a heritage permit for the temporary installation and future remediation of the site at the end of the project. We further assisted with the advertising process, and with satisfying permit conditions including an unexpected archaeological discovery of former tramways infrastructure.
We were also lucky to attend the official opening of the Hub building with former Lord Mayor Sally Capp AO, and a smoking ceremony and Welcome to Country by Uncle Colin Hunter Jr.
